UFAW INVITES NOMINATIONS FOR TWO PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

The Universities Federation for Animal Welfare (UFAW) is now inviting nominations for two of its prestigious awards to be made in 2017.

The UFAW Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Welfare Science recognises the exceptional achievements of an individual scientist who has made a major contribution to the advancement of animal welfare. It is open to individuals whose research, teaching, service and advocacy has significantly benefited the welfare of animals. Nominated candidates may be based anywhere in the world. The winner of the award will receive a cheque for £3,000, a commemorative medal and framed award certificate.

The UFAW Young Animal Welfare Scientist of the Year Award recognises the achievements of a young scientist who has made significant contributions to improving the welfare of animals. It is open to students, anywhere in the world, currently studying for a doctoral degree and to post doctoral scientists who are within six years of completing their PhD work. The winner of this award will receive a cheque for £1,000 and a framed award certificate.

Both of these awards were first given by UFAW in 2011 in recognition of the truly outstanding contributions that the award winners have made to benefit animal welfare.  Examples include work which revolutionised the study of poultry behaviour and ultimately helped lead to the European Union ban on battery cages, and work on lameness in sheep (which affects around three million sheep each year in the UK) which contributed to current best practice in managing lameness on sheep farms.

Further information and nomination forms for either award, which must be submitted to UFAW by 9th December 2016, are available on the ‘Grants andAwards’ page of the UFAW website (www.ufaw.org.uk).
